Plein Sud – Burger Royale au Fromage

6/10

I wanted to love this burger, but it was just too over-the-top for me. The ‘Burger Royale au Fromage’ as it is called, is stuffed with cheese. I’m not a huge fan of cheeseburgers because I find them to be too rich, so I asked if I could get this one sans fromage. The waiter, semi-horrified, said I should try it as is and that I would love it.

Untouched, the burger is already oozing cheese.

I like to dress and cut my burger in half before eating it, and depending on size I may even eat it with a fork. I am not exaggerating when I say that after I cut into this burger there was a volcano of cheese-lava that poured out of the patty for a good 4 minutes. I would be surprised if even 25% of the cheese stayed inside. If I had just bitten into it, I would have had cheese all over my face! To be perfectly honest, the whole experience of cheese flowing everywhere was a bit off-putting.

I loved the fries and the black truffle aioli it came with, and the overall presentation on a wooden plank, but that cheese explosion was just too much for me. Cheeseburger-fanatics may disagree.

Overall, Plein Sud is a cool TriBeCa spot with nice food and atmosphere, but the search for the best burger continues…

Food vs Experience?

Ever since my birthday dinner last week I’ve been thinking a lot about what is worth more when dining out – the quality of the food or the quality of the experience?

At first I thought, of course, it’s the food that matters most! But after last week’s dinner (superb food, terrible overall dining experience) I had second thoughts. Which of these scenarios would you rather return to:
– Excellent food, careless service, atmosphere not conducive to conversing with your guests, reservation process is painful and takes many back-and-forths.
– Completely mediocre food, but great service and there’s not a thing to complain about. The staff is attentive and makes you feel like a VIP from making reservations to leaving the restaurant.
I think the answer hinges mainly on why the person chose to dine out in the first place: to get away from cooking themselves? because they only go out to a restaurant twice a year? they’re on vacation? Thankfully, there are many happy mediums available and even a few gems with both a great dining experience and food, but at the end of the I believe them to be equally important.
They even managed to bring the wrong cake – a true comedy of errors.

A Sense of Humor: Part 2

Gramercy Tavern, arguably one of the best restaurants in New York, if not the world. Consistently fabulous food, impeccable service and a dash of… humor! While enjoying dinner at GT last week I came across a drink called the ‘N/A-groni’ on their non-alcoholic cocktail menu – I can’t say how much I am loving the double (triple?) entendre here.

Bazinga!

Gotta love a superlative restaurant that still doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
