Mast o Khiar is a classic Persian yogurt dip made with cucumbers, mint and seasoning.
This mast o khiar recipe originally appeared July 2012 and was updated in May 2016. Nooshejan (enjoy)!

As we approach those warmer days of spring and eventually the hot days of summer, I naturally start to shift my diet from heavier, heartier dishes to lighter and cooler ones. Do you too?
Most years I find myself turning to the same few foods that are delicious, healthy, and cooling in warm weather. Watermelon and stone fruits are one of them, and the other is Mast o Khiar, the Persian Cucumber Yogurt Dip. Hello, gorgeous.
So let me introduce you to this wonderful dish if you’ve never had the pleasure!
Mast o Khiar, or Persian yogurt and cucumber dip, is so super simple. Yogurt, cucumbers and mint come together for what’s probably the most refreshing and cooling dish EVER. I mean, by themselves each ingredient is pretty refreshing, but together they create some sort of magical reaction that takes it off the charts. If you’ve ever had tzatziki sauce, it’s fairly similar (and delicious).
Making mast o khiar is more an exercise in assembly than cooking. And ummm… don’t tell anybody but sometimes I do it right inside the yogurt container! Shhhhhh. π

That boat will certainly keep me afloat in the warm weather!!

Sounds delicious!
I love it… though I like Mountain High yogurt, on the sour side and not as thick as your version. I add walnuts as well to make it into a whole meal.
If only we could get Mountain High here!
Pavel’s was the best. Only found in the Bay Area, alas.
Ahu, I would love to see what your fruit salads look like.
I keep turning to melon and cucumbers too! This sounds perfect for summer.
Yummy, my favorites!
This looks great, I can think of so many things to eat it with!
Me too, thanks Cindy!
This is very interesting! We do a kind of a yoghurt dip but not as nearly exciting as this. And you’re right, it’s not really a dip per se. We sometimes eat it with naan bread π And this is photographed so beautifully! We will definitely try this soon.
That yogurt looks amazing! I’ve never had Persian Yogurt, but I’m interested to try it out!
Can’t wait to try this recipe. It looks and sounds amazing!!

This looks delicious! I always have this interest in exploring different cuisines. I might as well try a Persian dish this time! π
This looks so Delicious !!
I love that you sprinkle it with rosebuds! This is very similar to the raita recipe I use for Indian meals, but I like that you use a lot of cucumber! And the mint, oh, the mint! Love it!
Pretty presentation and it looks so good.
I love yogurt dips. Do you think I can make this with non-dairy yogurt?
Fresh mint is fine, I use it necessarily. Submission deserves special attention! Keep it up!
This looks delicious–and easy. My favorite combo. π
You photos are beautiful too. Nicely done!
I love it! I have actually tried similar but as a salad. Yoghurt. cucumber and grated nuts. So I will definitely try this out too. x

Oh that sounds great, I need to try it! Amazing what happens with the same set of ingredients and just different ratios, huh?!
Loved it !
Thank you! π
I actually made this yesterday to have with a lentil rice dish but mine wasn’t as pretty as yours π
I’m sure it tasted just a great if not better π
